Brockton High School Principal Cynthia Burns is pleased to announce that Alexandria Sylvia has been named the 2022 Dawn Sather Exemplary New Teacher by the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers.
“Alex is a wonderfully positive person and her enthusiasm for teaching science is infectious,” said Dr. David Mangus, Brockton High School Science Department Head. “The energy she brings to the classroom and the student-centered activities she designs, draw students in and trigger their innate curiosity.”
Sylvia joined the faculty as a new Chemistry teacher in fall 2019 and is a 2014 graduate of Brockton High School.
Over the last two years, Alex has served on the high school’s Science Department Steering Committee. She also teaches Earth Science in the school district’s evening and summer school programs and serves as a support teacher in the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center Biotech Apprenticeship Program.
“Alex is a passionate leader who truly cares about her community and the success of her students. We are proud that she chose to return to Brockton to launch her career,” said Cynthia Burns, Principal of BHS.
The Dawn Sather Exemplary New Teacher Award is given annually to teachers who have demonstrated remarkable achievement, accomplishment, and promise as science educators. Two other BHS educators, Yuen Chan and Dr. Laurie Jackson-Grusby, were the recipients of the award in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
Miss Sylvia will be honored at the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers annual banquet on Tuesday, November 8, in Marlborough.
